Carroll Drops Doubleheader To #16 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. - In what was their first game action in two weeks, the Carroll University softball team was welcomed back to the field by one of their toughest opponents on this year's schedule - 16th-ranked and undefeated UW-Whitewater. The Pioneers put up a fight, but dropped the first game 3-0, before also losing the nightcap, 5-1.

In game one, the only runs of the game came in two separate innings. The Warhawks (12-0) broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, the second coming on an RBI single to right center. UW-W would add another run on a solo homer in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Carroll's two hits in the game both came from Sophia Schmidt, which included one double. Andrea Kuhne (4-4) pitched well in defeat, allowing two earned runs on six hits in the complete game, while firing two strikeouts, without issuing a walk.

In the day's second game, Carroll (6-12) took their first lead of the day, scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Schmidt in the top of the first. That lead would last until the second frame when the Warhawks tied the score at one on a sac fly. They would take their first lead of the contest in the fifth on a solo home run, before adding a two-run shot in that same inning, and adding an RBI double to give themselves an insurance run.

The Pioneers finished with four hits, coming from Schmidt, Kiana Johnson, Bridget Rath, and Sydney Raddeman, who scored the Pios' only run.

Carroll will be in action again on April 7 when they will finally have their 2024 home opener with a conference doubleheader against Elmhurst University. That twinbill will begin at 1 p.m. at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.
