WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll baseball dropped a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon, losing 8-7 to Millikin, resulting in a three-game sweep for the Big Blue. Both teams had 10 hits and Carroll had three errors, two of which came in the pivotal eighth inning.
Lane Scott went a white-hot 4-for-5 with a triple on the day, while also driving in three runs and scoring two runs of his own. Joey Appino crossed the plate three times and added two more stolen bases to his season total.
Carroll made the first statement, gaining a 3-0 lead after the third inning. Millikin scored two in the top of fifth to get within striking distance, but Carroll put another crooked number on the board, scoring three to gain back a 6-2 cushion. The Big Blue responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth, keeping the Carroll lead far from comfortable. Connor Nolen came in in relief in the eighth to close the game out strongly as he has all season. A leadoff single and back-back slip-ups on sacrifice bunts by Nolen found Carroll with bases loaded and no outs. A walk and a sacrifice fly drove in two runs to give Millikin their first lead of the contest. Another single made the deficit larger, and Carroll went into the bottom of the eighth with a 8-6 disadvantage. In the bottom frame, Nick Angus hit a leadoff homer over the right field fence, but no further damage was inflicted by the Pios. Millikin only allowed one base runner in the ninth and retired the side, resulting in a heartbreaking loss for Carroll.
Carroll utilized four pitchers in the contest, including starter Erik Jaschinski, Roman Maguire, Brett Buzzelli, and Connor Nolen. The unit allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and tallied four strikeouts. Nolen suffered his second defeat of the season, going two innings in relief and allowing one earned run while striking out two batters.
Carroll returns to action on Tuesday, April 24 where they will travel to Naperville, Ill. to take on North Central in a CCIW battle beginning at 5 p.m.
