WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll baseball team had their three-game win streak snapped Wednesday evening, losing to Augustana 7-4. The loss was only the third home loss the Pioneers (8-14, 3-4 CCIW) have suffered this season. The Vikings (16-9, 3-4 CCIW) also snapped their own three-game skid.
Casey Mir went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double while Dalen Lamberson tallied three singles and a RBI. Joey Appino added three more singles, raising his season batting average to .357 on a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning, but the pitchers settled into the game and cruised through multiple innings with no damage. Carroll took its' first lead of the game in the fifth inning, when Eddie Synek singled through the right side, driving in Leo Matuga.
Augustana quickly gained the lead back in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs. The Vikings added one more in the seventh and two more in the ninth as all hope appeared to be lost for the Pioneers. Carroll showed resilience once again this season, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. But a well-hit line drive from Mir was caught at the left field fence, squandering any hopes of a Pioneer ninth inning rally.
The Pioneers four five pitchers including starter Braden Lewis, Roman Maguire, Noah Hoffman, and Connor Nolen. The group collected three strikeouts, giving up six earned runs on nine hits. Maguire suffered his first loss of the season, pitching 1.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits and giving up one earned run..
