Carroll Drops In-State Rivalry Game

KENOSHA, Wis. - Carroll lost their fourth straight game on Wednesday night, dropping a CCIW matchup to in-state rival Carthage. Carroll (15-22,7-12 CCIW) had five hits on the night. Carthage (22-14, 9-9 CCIW) had seven hits and committed zero errors to Carroll's four. 

Joey Appino went 2-for-4 on the night, with a solo home run to score the lone run for the Pioneers. Nick Angus, Leo Matuga, and Eddie Synek also contributed hits to round out the Pioneer attack at the plate. 

Carroll had the first words on the night, with Joey Appino hitting a leadoff home run over the right field fence. Carthage settled in, allowing only four hits the rest of the way and scoring five unanswered runs. Carroll threatened in the sixth, but ultimately stranded two runners as Carthage was able to come out victorious.  

Carroll utilized just two pitchers in the contest, with Brett Buzzelli getting the start and Connor Nolen coming in in the eighth in relief. Buzzelli suffered the loss, going seven innings, giving up four hits and one earned run and striking out four batters. Nolen pitched one inning in relief, allowing three earned runs and striking out two batters. 

Carroll concludes CCIW play on Friday, May 3 in a win-or-go-home game against Augustana. First pitch will be at 5:30 p.m.
