MORRIS, MN – Carroll Men's Soccer opened the 2024 campaign with a convincing road victory on Friday evening, defeating Minnesota-Morris by a score of 4-1. The victory came as head coach Andy Kohel's first win at the helm for the Pioneers. Carroll dominated in the game, outshooting the Cougars 33-5, with a shots on goal margin of 13-5.
Morris had the first words, coming out and scoring in the first 27 seconds of game-play. Carroll (1-0) responded in the 44th minute when David Serra scored the first goal of the season on a penalty kick. The two teams went into half tied at one apiece.
Marti Solanelles had the tie-breaking goal in the 55th minute off an assist from Josh Gonzaga to break the tie. From there, it was all Carroll as Gonzaga scored a goal of his own in the 59th minute, assisted by Serra. The goal was Gonzaga's 20th career goal, inching him closer to the top-10 all time in Carroll history. Sam Dorchester got in on the action in the 89th minute, scoring off of a Solanelles assist.
Jason Brunger played all 90 minutes at Goal Keeper for the Pioneers, allowing one goal and securing zero saves. Nick Isensee also played the entire game between the pipes for Morris(0-1), registering nine saves.
Carroll will be in action again on Sunday for the second and final game of their Minnesota road trip, as they take on St. John's (MN) beginning at 1p.m.
