WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll men's soccer battled level to halftime but fell 2–1 to Wheaton College in a CCIW match on Wednesday night at Schneider Stadium.
Wheaton struck first in the 18th minute when Jack Kern finished a service from Cooper Falling, but the Pioneers answered just before the break as Matthew Meke drove home the equalizer in the 44th minute to send the match into halftime tied 1–1. Early in the second half, the Thunder found the eventual winner on Craig Rusin's 52nd-minute strike, assisted by Luke Vander Kolk.
Carroll generated six shots on the night, three on target, while Wheaton finished with a 15–6 edge in attempts and a 7–3 advantage in shots on goal. Uriel Garcia recorded five saves for the Pioneers, and Wheaton's Jack Krahel made two stops to earn the win. The Thunder held a slight edge in possession (53%–47%) and led 5–3 in corners, though Carroll continued to press late and forced Krahel into a pair of saves in the closing minutes.
Carroll played level for most of the match with a very formidable opponent. Wheaton is yet to lose in the CCIW and a potential matchup for the Pioneers as the CCIW Conference Championship nears closer.
With the result, Carroll moved to 6–8–1 overall and 3–4–0 in the CCIW, while Wheaton improved to 11–2–3, 7–0–0 CCIW. The next matchup for the Pioneers comes this Saturday as they are back home at Schneider Stadium to face another CCIW foe in Illinois Wesleyan at 7:30pm.
