WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll men's basketball continued their newfound momentum on Saturday afternoon, picking up a CCIW victory against Augustana College (IL) inside Van Male Fieldhouse. Carroll (8-15, 4-10 CCIW) shot 48 percent from the field and made 13 longballs on white hot 52 percent shooting behind the arc. Augustana (14-9, 7-7 CCIW) shot over 44 percent from the field, under 32 percent from three, and out-rebounded the Pios on the offensive glass 12-8.
The games' leading scorer was Carroll senior Erik Victorson, who scored 24 points in 31 minutes. Victorson went 6-for-11 from three-point land and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. After last night, Victorson sits only three 3-point field goals away form second most all-time in a single season, and 13 attempts away from the most threes taken in a season in Carroll history.
Joining Victorson in double figures was fellow senior sharpshooter Aaron Wafford, who chipped in 16 points including four made threes, and junior center Jacob Naber, who added a 12-point, 10-board double-double to his season stat sheet.
It was a back-and-forth rock fight out the gates, as the two teams could not separate by more than one basket throughout the first 10 minutes of play. The Vikings grabbed their largest lead of the game with 9:15 remaining in the first half after a made three gave them a five-point edge. Carroll nullified that lead three possessions later, as back-to-back jumper from Wafford and Kobe SImpson, and an and-one layup from naber tied the game at 26. The budding rivals went blow-for-blow for the remainder of the half and Augustana went into the locker room with a 38-35 lead after 20 physical minutes of play.
An early layup gave Augustana another 5-point lead. That margin held four nearly four minutes until a Wafford three and layup from Lamar Smith tied the game at 47. Two possessions later, a pair of free throws from Evan Bland gave the Pioneers the lead for good. Over the next eight minutes, the Carroll offense caught fire, outscoring Augie 23-14 including six contributions from beyond the arc.
Back-to-back threes from Vikings graduate senior Tyler Knuth immediately stifled the momentum Carroll built and it was once again a one possession ball game. Victorson gave the Pioneers a lift down the stretch, cashing a three from a Kobe Simpson assist and making six crucial free throws as Carroll closed the game on an 11-4 run and left Van Male Fieldhouse with their second straight victory.
Carroll will return to the friendly confines of Van Male on Wednesday, February 19 where they will host North Central for Senior Night. That game will tip off at 7 p.m.
