NEENAH, Wis. – Carroll's women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, falling to Loras College by a score of 4-3, before defeating UW-Stevens Point 5-2.
In thier first match of the day, the Pioneers battled a tough Loras team in doubles, claiming two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At the number two flight,
Makayla Counsell and
Gracie Niebler won 6-3, while
Erin Horzewski teamed up with
Emily Stern to record a thrilling victory at the third flight by a score of 7-6 (7-4).
Against the Duhawks in singles play, the Pioneers won at the top two flights with dominating victories from sophomores
Natasa Pupovac and Kate Trifilio. Carroll would ultimately fall, despite some tight battles, losing in super-breakers at the three, four, and six positions.
In the day's second match, Carroll came out hot against UW-Stevens Point, winning all three doubles matches. Notably, the number one team of
Natasa Pupovac and
Aalaiya Jacklin won 7-6 (7-4), while Counsell and Niebler continued their hot streak to win 6-1 at the second flight.
In singles play, the Pioneers ran away with victory. In a battle at the number two position, Kate Trifilio won 3-6, 6-3, 14-12, despite falling 2-7 early in the super-breaker. Counsell finished up her day at four singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory, while Horzewski dominated at number five singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win, leading the Pioneers to a 5-2 match victory.
Carroll (6-6) will continue their season in March when they'll travel to Hilton Head, S.C. over spring break.
