Pios Get Swept at MSOE

GLENDALE, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team took a short trip to take on MSOE in a Friday afternoon doubleheader, falling in both games by scores of 7-5 and 12-2 in seven innings.
The Pioneers, who started the year 3-0, have now dropped three straight games, falling to 3-3 overall. The Pios  combined for 11 hits on the afternoon.

GAME 1 (7-5 MSOE)
Jimmy WIlliams went 2-for-3 and drove in one run, leading the Pios at the plate. Leo Matuga crossed home plate twice to bring his season run total to four.

MSOE, who amassed 11 hits, did all of their damage in the final four innings at the plate, as Carroll started the game with a 4-0 advantage. MSOE knotted the game at 4-4 in a three-run fifth inning. 

Carroll showed fight in the ninth inning, scoring one run on a sac-fly from Eddie Synek, but that would be as close as the Pioneers would come, as MSOE ended the game two batters later with runners on second and third.

Carroll utilized three pitchers, including starter Erik Jaschinski who allowed five earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk through five complete innings. Joey Rivera and Chayce Schultz also took the mound for the Pioneers, combining to yield one run on two hits the rest of the way. Jaschinski suffered his first loss on the season while the counterpart of MSOE reliever Kellen Pate was credited with the win. 

GAME 2 (12-2 MSOE - 7 innings)
Jimmy Williams continued his solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and one walk in the second game of the twin bill. Nathan Crick collected two hits and one RBI for the Pioneers, who did all of their damage in the second inning at the plate.

Carroll's first runs came on a double from Crick that sent in Ben Hurt-Haller. Crick was awarded on an RBI from Austin Palmer.

MSOE did a majority their damage on the bookend innings, scoring three runs in the first and four runs in the seventh to end the game in abbreviated fashion.

Dylan Eckrote was the starting pitcher and suffered the loss, yielding six earned runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk through 1.2 innings on the mound.Jack Piper and Conor Dunlavy combine for the final five innings, giving up four earned runs off of five hits. Piper tallied four strikeouts to lead the Carroll battery.

Carroll is back in action at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon versus Lakeland University in the season-opening series for the Muskies.
