Carroll Splits Doubleheader Against Edgewood

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Carroll continued their spring break campaign at the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge with a doubleheader against Edgewood College, splitting the day by scores of 12-0 in 7 innings and 10-24 in 8 innings. In the two games combined, Carroll (8-5) had 25 hits, six of which went for extra bases. Edgewood (2-6) produced 15 hits, including 12 in game two.

GAME 1 (12-0 Carroll, 7 innings)

Joey Appino went 3-for-5 at the plate with one double and four RBIs while Dalen Lamberson also tallied three hits to continue his strong season at the plate. Eddie Synek and Ben Hurt Haller both tallied two hits and both hit a double to round out the Pios' extra-base hits. Five other Pios tallied hits in an impressive team performance in game one.

Carroll scored early and often, putting a donut on the scoreboard in only the second inning and registering crooked numbers in five out of seven trips to the plate. In the fifth inning Appino sent a double down the right field line, scoring both Andres Gonzalez and Thomas Ward. Appino was immediately rewarded with a single from Lamberson to right-center field. An RBI single from Jack Stetler in the seventh gave Carroll the mercy rule advantage while the defense put the finishing touches on the abbreviated victory.

Tyler Frederick earned his second win of the season, tossing a complete seven inning game, allowing only three hits and no runs while also striking out four batters and walking only one.

GAME 2  (24-10 Edgewood, 8 innings)

Appino continued to feel it inside the batter's box, sending his first home run of the season over the right field fence in the fourth inning, a solo shot. Ben Hurt Haller and Ward joined Appino with multi-hit games, both of whom added three hits to their statsheet. Two other Pioneers safely reached base on hits, including Synek and Preston Sanders

The Eagles found rhythm with their bats early on, scoring three in the first and second innings, and seven runs in the third to jump to a 13-3 early lead. Carroll responded with five unanswered runs of their own, keeping the game within striking distance at 13-8. Edgewood exploded for 11 more runs, seven of which came in the eighth, as Carroll committed a few costly errors defensively and was unable to get hot at the plate, ending the day with a doubleheader split.

Carroll used a battalion of ten pitchers in the game two defeat, with Noah Hoffman earning the start and striking out two batters in one inning and some change. Joey Rivera, Carson Gratz, Alex Vogt, Chayce Schultz, Tyler Burns, Isaac Verbruggen, Ben Olsen, Tanner LaMack, and Roman Maguire all saw action on the mound throughout the day, combining to allow 15 earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Carroll will get a day off in Pensacola, Fla. Before returning to action with a matchup against Sewanee. First pitch of that game will begin at 7 p.m. (ET)
