Carroll Drops Doubleheader on the Road

BELOIT, Wis. - Carroll baseball returned from Spring Break with a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, falling at Beloit College by scores of 4-3 (10 innings) and 13-6. In the two games combined, Carroll (9-7) had 26 hits, six of which went for extra bases. Beloit (10-4) produced 22 hits, including 16 in game two.

GAME 1 (4-3 Beloit, 10 innings)

Lane Scott went 3-for-5 in game one with three singles and one RBI to lead the Pios' production at the plate. Dalen Lamberson, Eddie Synek, and Ben Hurt Haller all tallied two hits and three other Pios tallied hits, including doubles from Thomas Ward and Andres Gonzalez.

Carroll struggled to push runs across, as eight base runners were left stranded through eight complete innings. Beloit scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, leaving Carroll with a manageable, yet dangerous 3-0 deficit.

In a ninth inning desperation effort, Ward started the baserunners with a one-out double to left field, followed by Nathan Crick reaching base on balls. Following a strikeout, Joey Appino walked to load the bases, and Dalen Lamberson came in clutch, sending a 2 RBI single to right field, bringing the Pios within one run. Scott followed that up with an RBI single of his own, and Carroll tied the game in the last-ditch effort. After holding in the defensive half of the inning, Carroll moved onto extra innings with new life.

Carroll was unable to plate any runs in the tenth inning, Connor Nolen took the mound in his second inning of relief, walking four consecutive baserunners as Beloit secured the extra-inning victory in heartbreaking fashion.

Carroll utilized four arms in the first game, including starter Erik Jaschinski who threw five complete innings and struck out nearly half the batters he faced, tallying a career high 10 strikeouts. Alex Vogt, Chayce Schultz, Isaac Verbruggen, and Nolen took the mound in relief in game one.

GAME 2  (13-6 Beloit)

While game one was a defensive battle, game two was an offensive showcase, as the two teams combined for 30 hits. Lamberson continued to produce at the plate, going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI. Appino got back in rhythm with three hits and two runs in the second game, while Scott and Ward both add two more hits to their season scoresheet. Three other Pioneers safely reached base on hits, including Jimmy Williams, Brody Ferko, and Austin Palmer

Both teams scored early and often throughout the second contest, as Carroll scored one run in all but one of the first six innings and Beloit plated one run in the first two frames and two in the fifth inning. After a quick couple of half innings, Beloit's offense erupted in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring six runs on five hits and two Pioneer errors. The Buccaneers followed that up with three more runs to add salt to the wound in the eighth inning. The Pios pushed across one run in the top of the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback as Carroll left the doubleheader empty-handed

Carroll used a four arms in the game two defeat, with Tyler Frederick earning the start and striking out three batters in six full innings. Alex Vogt, Joey Rivera, and Roman Maguire all saw action on the mound throughout the game, combining to allow three earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

Carroll will make a quick turnaround for another contest on Sunday evening, as they return to the friendly confines of Frame Park. That game has seen a time change due to weather and first pitch is now scheduled for 7 p.m..
