WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll defeated Wartburg 4-3 Sunday evening in a non-conference battle that went down to the wire.
The Pioneers kicked things off in doubles play by winning at the second flight by a score of 6-4, as Carroll's duo of Makyla Counsell and
Gracie Niebler claimed their eighth win of the season. The Pios would fall in the other two doubles matches, losing the doubles point.
In singles play, the Pioneers surged, kicking it off with
Katherine Trifilio winning 6-1, 6-4 at the number two flight.
Erin Horzewski fell down 0-5 in her number five singles match, but turned gears and won 13 straight games to claim a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Counsell completed her own comeback at the number four position. After falling in the first set 1-6, Counsell finished the match with a 6-3 set win and a 10-3 win in the super breaker. Finally,
Natasa Pupovac had to battle at number one singles to clinch the match for the Pioneers. After falling in the first set 4-6, Pupovac completed the come back in a thriller. She won 6-2 and 10-8 to win the match for the Pios.
The win improves Carroll's season record to 10-6, which marks the first time since 2019 that the Pioneers have reached 10 wins in a season. They will be in action again on April 5 against Edgewood.
