KENOSHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team lost both games of Wednesday's doubleheader at Carthage, dropping the first 9-1 in five innings, before falling 6-1 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
In the day's first game, Carroll (11-15, 2-4 CCIW) struck first, scoring their only run in the top fo the first when
Kali Stanchina singled to right field, allowing
Val Osthoff to cross the plate. That lead was short-lived, as Carthage scored on a triple in the bottom of that inning.
The Firebirds would take their first led of the day in the second frame, scoring three runs on an RBI single and a two-run single to center. They added two more runs in both the third and fourth inning, scoring on a trio of RBI singles and a run-scoring double, while capping the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth, which ended the game.
Carroll finished with six hits in the contest, led by
Jenna Andler, who went 2-for-2 at the dish, with a double. Rile Pavelka recorded four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO
The day's second game saw Carthage strike first with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the third inning. They added another run-scoring single in the fourth, before scoring on a sac bunt in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead.
Carroll's only run of the contest came in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by
Madison Strampe down the left field line, allowing
Kiana Johnson to score. Carthage would put the game out of reach with another run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
The Pioneers recorded six hits in the game, with two coming off the bat of Johnson.
Makayla Wall (5-7) went the distance in the circle, allowing five earned runs and striking out eight batters in her seven innings of work.
Carroll will try to rebound with a doubleheader against North Park on Saturday, for what will be Senior Day for the Pioneers. That twinbill will begin at 1 p.m. from Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.
