Late Viking Comeback Sinks Pios

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Carroll started a weekend series with a single road game for the second consecutive week, falling to the Vikings of Augustana College (IL) by a score of 6-5 on Friday afternoon. Carroll (14-16,  5-8 CCIW) had seven hits to Augustana's 11, with Jimmy Williams and Eddie Synek nabbing extra bases on a double and triple, respectively.

Anthony Tado was the lone Pioneer with a multi-hit day, going 3-for-4 in his plate appearances. Joey Appino, Williams, Synek, and Ferko were the other Pio hitters to reach base via a hit, with Synek leading the way with 2 RBIs.

Augustana (16-13, 5-6 CCIW) plated one in the first inning to earn an early advantage. After the first two trips to the plate were retired in order, Carroll evened the score with one run in the third, which was immediately recouped by the Vikings in the bottom half of the inning. Carroll took their first lead of the game when Appino scored on an error and Synek sent a 2RBI triple to the right field gap, scoring Williams and Lane Scott

Carroll's defense held strong for several innings, as starter Tyler Fredrick kept the Vikings offense at bay, but one run in the seventh tied the game at five, and another one in the eighth gave Augustana the lead for good as the Pios could not produce in the ninth-inning effort.

Three Pioneers took the mound in the defeat, including starter Tyler Fredrick, who tallied three strikeouts and allowed five runs in six innings on the bump. Chayce Schultz and Erik Jaschinski both earned relief action, with Jaschinski striking out two batters and inheriting the defeat.

Carroll will make another quick turnaround with a CCIW home doubleheader against against the Vikings to close out the weekend conference series. First pitch of game one from Frame Park will be at 1 p.m..
