Pioneers Can't Overcome Late Titan Rally

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Carroll baseball took the field once again on Tuesday night, falling at Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 11-4 in a rescheduled CCIW contest. The loss marks the sixth straight at the hands of the Titans. Carroll (11-9, 2-2 CCIW) had eight hits and left nine runners stranded in the game. Illinois Wesleyan (8-10, 1-2 CCIW) produced 14 hits, including three going for extra bases.

Lane Scott went 3-for-4 to lead the Pios' production at the plate and led the the team with two RBI. Dalen Lamberson, Jimmy Williams, Eddie Synek, Thomas Ward, and Gabe Lee all tallied hits in the contest to round out the Carroll offensive attack.

Carroll was the first team to the fight after a slow start on both sides, scoring off a Jimmy Williams single in the fourth inning. They followed that up with three more runs in the ensuing inning, with Lamberson and Scott batting in runs to gain a 4-0 advantage midway through. The Titans offense finally found a rhythm, exploding for five runs in the bottom of the fifth and six more in the sixth, scoring 11 unanswered runs behind 10 hits across the two frames. The action in those two innings capped off the scoring, as both defenses put blanks on the scoreboard for the rest of the game, and the deficit was too much to overcome for the Pios.

Carroll utilized six different pitchers in the game, including starter Braden Lewis who threw four and one-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and conceding his first loss of the season. Chayce Schultz, Tyler Burns, Isaac Verbruggen, Ben Olsen, and Joey Rivera combined to close the game in relief. The group compounded six hits and six earned runs, while striking out one batter.

Due to weather, Carroll's next matchup at Wheaton College (IL), originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, has been moved to Thursday, April 3. That game start has also been moved to 6:30 p.m.
