Pios Lose Pair of Close Games

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team lost both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Wheaton (IL). The Thunder won the first game 2-0 in a contest that saw all the runs scored in the seventh inning, while completing the sweep with a 4-3 walk-off victory in game two.

GAME ONE
The day's first game featured just five hits combined between the two teams, which took a scoreless tie into the final inning. Wheaton (16-18, 4-8 CCIW) broke that tie in the top of the seventh on a throwing error, before adding a bases loaded walk later in that frame.

Carroll's three hits came from Gianna Buske, MK Dusza, and Kiana Johnson. The Pio pitching staff combined to allow just two hits. Riley Pavelka pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing one hit in the no-decision.

GAME TWO
The day's second game saw Carroll (13-19, 4-8 CCIW) strike first, with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Buske drove in the first run on an RBI single up the middle, allowing Curtis to score, while Dusza drove in Buske with a single of her own later in that frame. Wheaton got one of those runs back in the bottom of that inning when Olivia Nahomiak scored on a sacrifice fly.

Buske would score another run in the third, crossing the plate on a wild pitch, but Wheaton evened things up in the fourth on a two-run homer to left field off the bat of Abby Whitehead.

The score would remain tied entering the bottom of the seventh, but Wheaton would change that, ending the game on a one-out fielding error, which allowed Isabel Hillyer to score.

Carroll finished with six hits as a team, with Buske recording half of those in her 3-for-4 effort. Curtis, Dusza, and Jenna Andler recorded the other three hits for the Pios.

Carroll will be in action again on Saturday, when they'll host Illinois Wesleyan in a doubleheader. Those games will begin at 1 p.m. at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.
