ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team defeated Augustana (IL) 21-2 Saturday afternoon, which secures the Pios' first outright CCIW regular season championship, and the second in program history. Their 21 goals are just two shy of the school's single game record, while the Pios have now scored at least 17 goals in four consecutive contests. The win also completes Carroll's first-ever undefeated conference season.
Carroll (11-3, 5-0 CCIW) wasted no time, scoring early and often, as
Samantha Hurd and
Elizabeth Wang both scored goals in the opening minute. Augustana would cut that lead in half on a Madison Langewisch goal three minutes later, but Carroll answered with seven consecutive goals in the remaining minutes of the opening period, with five different Pios finding the back of the net during that scoring spree. Wang and
Sierra Skack each scored in the second quarter, while
Abby Tubbs added a pair of goals in the period to take a 13-2 halftime lead.
In the second half, Hurd opened the scoring, while Wang followed suit with her 52nd goal of the year. Tubbs added three more goals later in that quarter.
Lauren Fricke, Tubbs, and
Grace Brockman rounded out the scoring with goals in the fourth quarter.
Tubbs led the Pioneers with the freshman's second consecutive seven-goal game, which is two goals shy of the program's single game record. Wang added five goals and tied a career-high with three assists, while Fricke scored three times. Skack and Hurd each added a pair of goals, while Skack led the team with five assists, which is just one shy of the school record for a game.
Grace Brockman added three assists for the Pios.
Carroll will now turn their attention to the CCIW Tournament, in which the Pios are the number one seed. The will host #4 North Central (IL) in the CCIW Semifinals Wednesday at 7 p.m. from Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis. The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's CCIW Championship Game to play the other semifinal winner (#3 Illinois Wesleyan at #2 Carthage).
