Naperville, Ill. – Despite their best efforts, Pioneers fall in their CCIW Opener 2-5. Carroll Women's Tennis post best result against the Cardinals since their 8-1 victory in 2017.
In doubles,
Natasa Pupovac and
Katherine Trifilio battled back and forth with senior duo Abby Penados and Kensington Payne. Ultimately the Pioneers triumphed, winning 7-6 (7-2) in a thrilling match. At three doubles, freshmen
Megan Trifilio and
Nawal Souki also found themselves in a tight battle. Unfortunately, the Pioneers did not prevail and fell 6-7 (5-7) in a tight match. The Pioneers also fell at two doubles; North Central won the doubles point.
The competitive matches did not stop in singles as there were three matches ending in tiebreakers. Freshman,
Mia Franke from Kenosha, Wis, won at five singles in a thrilling match. Franke won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second 4-6, after a back-and-forth tiebreaker Mia pulled away, winning 10-6. Senior,
Erin Horzewski, also found herself in a tiebreaker after the first two sets went 2-6, 6-4. Horzewski was victorious in the tiebreaker winning 10-5. At three singles,
Megan Trifilio competed with senior Liveta Ezerskis. The younger of the Trifilio sisters unfortunately lost in the closest match of the day 4-6, 7-5, 8-10.
Despite the loss, the Pioneers showed signs of excellence. North Central improves to 1-0 as the Pios fall to 1-1 (0-1 in the CCIW). Carroll takes on CCIW foe, Carthage, on Sunday, September 7
th at 10 am.
