No. 1 Wheaton Pulls Away Late From Carroll in CCIW Defeat

WHEATON, Ill. – Carroll University football hung with the nation's top-ranked team early Saturday afternoon, but No. 1 Wheaton College pulled away for a 41-3 victory over the Pioneers at McCully Stadium.

The loss moved Carroll to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in CCIW play, while Wheaton improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference action.

After Wheaton opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, Carroll answered with its best drive of the afternoon. Beginning at its own 25-yard line, the Pioneers marched 67 yards on 17 plays while taking nearly nine minutes off the clock. Anthony Martorano helped spark the possession with a 21-yard run, while Carroll converted a pair of fourth downs before Matthew Swink connected on a 25-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3 with 13:19 remaining in the second quarter.

The Pioneers' defense kept the game close on Wheaton's ensuing possession, stopping the Thunder on fourth down at the Carroll 33-yard line. Wheaton eventually broke through again later in the quarter, finding the end zone with 3:22 remaining before adding another touchdown with just 24 seconds left to take a 20-3 advantage into halftime.

Wheaton took control after the break. The Thunder scored twice in the third quarter before adding their final touchdown six seconds into the fourth, extending the lead to 41-3. Wheaton finished with 486 yards of total offense, including 287 through the air and 199 on the ground, while Carroll totaled 205 yards.
