ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine jumped out to an early lead and controlled play throughout, handing Carroll University a 12–2 setback in nonconference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Shive Field.
The Thunder struck twice in the opening quarter and added four more goals in the second period to take a 6–0 advantage into halftime. Trine continued to dictate possession in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to extend the margin to 11–0 and put the game out of reach.
Despite the score, Carroll's defense and goalkeeper Jake Gehl kept the Pioneers competitive early. Gehl finished with 17 saves, including several stops during extended Trine possessions in the first half. Carroll also limited Trine on clears, forcing multiple turnovers, but was unable to convert those opportunities into goals.
Carroll broke through midway through the fourth quarter when Ethan Phillips scored unassisted with 8:15 remaining, finishing a transition chance to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard. Just 48 seconds later, Zach Szuba added a goal off a feed from Jake Kapocis, trimming the deficit to 11–2 and briefly swinging momentum Carroll's way.
Trine answered with a late goal to close out the scoring and secure the victory.
Carroll finished with 19 shots and won 19 of 25 clear attempts, while Trine held a significant edge in ground balls. Phillips and Szuba accounted for Carroll's two goals, and Kapocis recorded the team's lone assist.
The Pioneers will look to regroup as they continue nonconference play next week with their first home contest against Lawrence.
