DECATUR, Ill. — Carroll University baseball came up just short Friday night, falling 1–0 in 10 innings to Millikin in a tightly contested CCIW matchup.
The game developed into a classic pitchers' duel, with both starters delivering strong outings and keeping offenses in check through nine scoreless innings. Carroll's Erik Jaschinski was outstanding on the mound, going 9 innings for the Pioneers. The senior allowed just one run on six hits, striking out three while working efficiently through nine-plus innings.
Millikin starter Caleb Akins matched Jaschinski pitch for pitch, tossing a 10-inning shutout while allowing four hits and striking out six to keep Carroll off the scoreboard.
Carroll generated several early opportunities, recording hits in the second, third, and seventh innings, but was unable to push a run across. Evan Becker led the Pioneers with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, while Joey Appino and Leo Matuga each added singles.
Defensively, Carroll was sharp throughout the night, turning a pair of double plays and limiting Millikin's scoring chances until the extra frame.
The game was ultimately decided in the bottom of the 10th inning. After a leadoff walk and an intentional pass loaded the bases, Millikin's Sam Bushur delivered a walk-off single to left field, driving in the game's only run.
Despite the result, Carroll showed resilience in a hard-fought conference contest, matching Millikin inning for inning in one of the lowest-scoring games of the season.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back as conference play continues this weekend, with a doubleheader tomorrow in Decatur.
