DECATUR, Ill. — The Carroll University baseball team earned a split in its CCIW doubleheader at Millikin on Saturday, opening the day with a 1–0 shutout victory before falling 11–1 in the second game.
Game 1 – Carroll 1, Millikin 0
Carroll used timely hitting and an outstanding pitching performance to take the opener of the doubleheader in a tightly contested matchup.
The Pioneers scored the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning. After Eddie Synek reached base, Leo Matuga delivered an RBI single to right field, bringing Synek home to give Carroll a 1–0 advantage.
That lone run was more than enough thanks to Tyler Fredrick, who turned in a dominant outing on the mound. Fredrick worked 8.2 scoreless innings, allowing 11 hits while striking out six and issuing just one walk to earn the win.
Millikin threatened throughout the game, but Carroll's pitching and defense consistently worked out of traffic. Chayce Schultz came on in relief in the ninth and retired the final batter to secure his third save of the season.
Offensively, Carroll totaled seven hits in the win, led by Joey Appino, who went 2-for-4, while Evan Becker, Brody Ferko, and Matuga each added hits.
Game 2 – Millikin 11, Carroll 1
Millikin jumped out early in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the first inning and adding runs in each of the next several frames to pull away.
Carroll's lone run came in the fourth inning when Nathan Crick drove in Evan Becker on a groundout, briefly cutting the deficit. Becker finished the game with a pair of hits, while Joey Appino also recorded multiple hits in the loss.
Despite the early deficit, Carroll continued to battle throughout the game, with multiple pitchers seeing action out of the bullpen as the Pioneers looked to limit further damage.
Carroll moves forward from the doubleheader split as conference play continues this Tuesday when they head to Carthage for a single game at 1pm.
