Carroll Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Elmhurst

ELGIN, Ill. — The Carroll University baseball team earned a split in its CCIW doubleheader at Elmhurst on Friday afternoon, opening the day with a 6–2 victory before dropping a hard-fought 12–10 decision in the nightcap at Hoffer Field.

Game 1 – Carroll 6, Elmhurst 2

Carroll set the tone early in the opener, scoring three runs in the first inning and riding a strong pitching performance to the win.

Jimmy Williams put the Pioneers on the board with an RBI single, Ross Olsen followed with an RBI walk, and Eddie Synek capped the inning with a two-run single to give Carroll a 3–0 advantage. Carroll added another run in the third on an RBI single by Synek, extending the lead to 4–0.

The Pioneers provided insurance in the eighth inning when Joey Appino launched a two-run home run, pushing the margin to 6–0.

On the mound, Tyler Fredrick delivered a standout start, working eight scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. Fredrick earned the win, improving to 4–4 on the season, before Carroll closed out the game in the ninth.

Synek finished the opener with three RBIs, while Appino went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Carroll totaled 11 hits in the win.

Game 2 – Elmhurst 12, Carroll 10

The nightcap turned into an offensive back-and-forth battle, with Carroll rallying multiple times before Elmhurst pulled ahead late.

Carroll struck first with an unearned run in the opening inning and responded again in the third to keep pace. The Pioneers' biggest surge came in the fourth inning, when Carroll erupted for six runs to take an 8–4 lead. The rally featured RBI hits from Joey Appino, Dalen Lamberson, Evan Becker, and Eddie Synek.

Elmhurst answered with runs in the fourth and then took control in the sixth, scoring five runs to swing the momentum. Carroll continued to battle, adding a run in the seventh on a passed ball, but was unable to complete another comeback.

Offensively, Carroll finished game two with 17 hits, led by Leo Matuga, who went 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Lamberson added three hits and two RBIs, while Becker, Synek, and Appino also drove in runs.

Following the split, Carroll moved to 19–15 overall and 7–8 in CCIW play as the Pioneers continue conference action on Tuesday as they head to Augustana for a single game starting at 6pm.
