Late Innings Prove Costly as Carroll Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wheaton

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University baseball team battled throughout a CCIW doubleheader on Friday afternoon but came up short in both contests against Wheaton, falling 9–5 in each game at Frame Park.

Game 1 – Wheaton 9, Carroll 5

The opener featured a competitive start, with Carroll getting on the board in the first inning as Dalen Lamberson drove in Joey Appino on a sacrifice fly after Wheaton put up three in the top half of the inning. Carroll continued to chip away, tying the game in the sixth inning behind an RBI single from Nathan Crick and an RBI walk drawn by Ross Olsen.

Wheaton regained control in the seventh, scoring five runs to create separation. Carroll continued to fight offensively, highlighted by a home run from Crick and an RBI from Leo Matuga, but was unable to complete the comeback.Erik Jaschinski got the start and went six innings, only giving up three runs.

Carroll totaled 10 hits in game two, with Crick, Appino, and Lamberson each recording multi-hit performances.

Game 2 – Wheaton 9, Carroll 5

Carroll struck early in the second game as Joey Appino led off the game with a solo home run, giving the Pioneers a quick advantage. Wheaton answered back over the next few innings, and the teams traded runs as the game remained tight through the middle frames.

Carroll tied the game in the seventh inning, capitalizing on pressure on the basepaths to even the score at 4–4. Appino then scored in the bottom of the eighth on a Lamberson single to take the 5-4 lead going into the top half of the ninth. The Thunder responded in the ninth with a big offensive push, scoring five runs to break the game open and pull away late.

Leo Matuga and Dalen Lamberson each delivered RBI hits for Carroll, while Nathan Crick added two hits as the Pioneers finished with 12 hits in the contest.

Following the doubleheader, Carroll moved to 20–18 overall and 8–11 in CCIW play as conference action continued. The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow as they host senior day against non-conference opponent Marian at 1pm.
