George Haas returns for his seventh season on the Pioneer men’s basketball staff. In joining Paul Combs’ staff for the 2013-2014 season, Haas has coached under three Carroll head coaches. He was an assistant coach for David Schultz from 2007-2009 and was retained on the staff by David Buchanan from 2009-2013.
Haas was a highly successful coach at Wauwatosa East High School for 27 years – 13 years as the junior varsity coach and 14 years as the varsity head coach. His teams won 482 games, including a 270-50 record at the varsity level.
In his 14 years as a varsity head coach, Wauwatosa East won 12 conference championships, while advancing to the State Tournament in 1997 and 2002. Haas won several Conference Coach of the Year awards and was named Wisconsin’s Coach of the Year in 2002.
During his high school tenure, Haas coached several players that went on to successful collegiate careers and two players that eventually played in the National Basketball Association – Tony Smith and Devin Harris.
“Carroll University and our entire men’s basketball team is extremely excited about the addition of George Haas and Billy Swartz to our program,” said Combs. “Both have been successful head coaches and bring a ton of experience to our team both on and off the court. We are grateful to have each of them play a major role in Pioneers basketball for many years to come."
