(Waukesha, Wis.) - St. Norbert College visits Van Male Fieldhouse on Tuesday night in a pair of marquee Midwest Conference basketball tilts. The Pioneers and Green Knights men tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
A four-game winning streak has shot Carroll's men up the MWC leaderboard. The Pioneers have given themselves breathing room in the top-four and have now set their sights at the top. At 10-5 in league play, Carroll is a game behind second place Ripon College (11-4) while both trail St. Norbert, who is a perfect 14-0 in league play. The Green Knights have already secured a spot in the four-team MWC Tournament and need one win in their final four league games to wrap-up the league's regular season championship.
With its 18-1 overall record, St. Norbert is also looking to protect its national image. The Green Knights were ranked No. 8 in the county in last week's d3hoops.com top-25 poll.
Tuesday's matchup will also be interesting from a statistical point of view. Carroll and St. Norbert ranked 1-2 in many MWC categories, including scoring defense and offensive field goal percentage. The Green Knights are giving up just 63.9 points per game while the Pioneers are yielding just 65.8 points per game. On the other end of the court, Carroll leads the league and nation in field goal percentage at 54.3% while St. Norbert is ranked second in the MWC and among the national leaders at 52.3%.
Neither team has a dominant scorer but both rely on a balanced scoring attack. Kam Cerroni leads the Green Knights at 17.4 points per game (10
th in MWC) followed by Brandon Gries (15.6 ppg/13
th in MWC) and Andrew Schwoerer (15.3 ppg /15
th in MWC). Andrew Nottling's 14.7 points per game (16
th in MWC) leads the Pioneers while Alec Molter (13.1 ppg/25
th in MWC) and Kevin Hurd (12.6 ppg/27
th in MWC) also average double figures in scoring.
Carroll's women get another crack at a co-MWC leader on Tuesday. Cornell College and St. Norbert are tied atop the league standings at 12-2 followed closely by Monmouth College at 12-3. At 10-5 in league play, the Pioneers are now in sole possession of fourth place. Carroll stood toe-to-toe with Cornell on Saturday night, nearly pulling off the upset of the defending league champions before falling in double-overtime, 92-90.
The Pioneer women will be looking to reverse their fortunes from the loss at St. Norbert on Dec. 18. In the loss, Carroll was limited to 34.4% while the Green Knights connected on 57.8% of their field goal attempts. SNC also dominated on the boards, 40-22.
Carroll's trapping defense will likely be a key against St. Norbert. The Pioneers lead the MWC by forcing 23.5 points per game.
St. Norbert is led on offense by the duo of Heidi Van Sistine (11.0 ppg/23
rd in MWC) and Brianna Byrne (10.7 ppg/25
th in MWC) while Carroll has an impressive four players averaging double figures, led by Emily DeNoyer's 14.7 points per game (9
th in MWC). Malory Christenson is the league's 15
th leading scorer at 12.3 ppg followed by Breann Maryanski (11.7 ppg/18
th in MWC) and Corrine Engels (11.2 ppg/22
nd in MWC).
Back-to-back games with over 20 points has given DeNoyer a legitimate chance of reaching the 1,000 career-point plateau. The senior enters Tuesday night's game with 968 career points. She is attempting to become the 14
th player in Carroll women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
Carroll plays all of its home games in Van Male Fieldhouse, located on CU's campus between Barstow Street and East Ave. in Waukesha, Wis. Tickets to home games are available on game-day, one hour prior to tipoff. Carroll students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge with a valid Carroll ID card on a first-come, first-serve basis. For others, prices are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens (62 and older) and $3 for children (15 and under).
