Late Rally Gives #18 Buena Vista Victory Over Pios

Box Score TUCSON, Arizona - Carroll University (1-3) score single runs in the first and second innings, two in the third and another in the fourth as they ran out to a 5-0 lead., However, 18th ranked Buena Vista would chip away and the lead permanently in the bottom of the 7th.

The Pioneers had a chance to tie or take the lead in the 8th inning as they loaded the bases with no one out., Following a strike out for the first out of the inning, Dylan Grove sent a fly ball to right field, Clayton Schmitt tagged up but was thrown out on a perfect throw from the Beaver's right fielder to end the threat in the 8th., Freshman AJ Johnson doubled with one out in the ninth to put the tying run in scoring position again, but the Pios couldn't come up with the big hit and fell just short to the highly ranked Beavers.

Newcomer Aaron Roth got the start on the mound for Carroll and worked six strong innings for the Pios., Dan Arden has continued to pitch effectively following his record breaking 2014 season in which he set a new school record for lowest ERA in a season, working another two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Offensively, Johnson had a day to remember finishing 4x5 with four doubles with a pair of runs batted in., Junior Clayton Schmitt finished the day 3x4 with a run scored.

Head Coach Stein Rear added, "We had opportunities in the middle innings to give ourselves a chance to tack on runs and we failed to execute.,We were still able to put ourselves in a,position to win the game late,,but just couldn't push across the runs. ,I'm proud of the way we competed, but we had an opportunity for a signature win and let it slip away from us.",

Following a varsity reserve double-header Tuesday night, the Pioneers have an off day before returning to action on Thursday against Simpson College at noon local time.
