Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Carroll University (6-5) held on to a late lead and defeated host MacMurray College Sunday afternoon by the final of 7-6.
The Pios would have a quick turn around as they would be back on the field at noon on Sunday following a late night double-header that saw the final out recorded at midnight the night before.
MacMurray would jump on the sluggish Pioneers early as the built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings. Carroll would wake up in the fourth inning as Alex Olson would lead off with a single, advance to third on a Kyle Sykes single and score on an RBI ground out by AJ Johnson. Following a walk to Clayton Schmitt, Sykes would score on the back end of a double steal to close the gap to 3-2.
Sykes would again clutch-up as he would double home Olson with the tying run in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.
MacMurray would respond in the bottom of the sixth and retake the lead 4-3 and have the bases loaded, only to have Carroll pitcher Brian Jones knock down a hard line-drive back up the middle with his bare hand and recover the ball to record the out and limit the damage.
Carroll would take their initial lead of the game in the seventh as they pushed across three runs to take a 6-4 lead. The big hit in the inning was a bases loaded single by Dylan Grove to drive in two runs.
Carroll would add a vital insurance run in the top of the ninth as Tyler Schovanec would double and eventually score on a Grove sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-4.
The Pio bullpen would make the lead stand. Danny Arden would work a clean seventh and eighth innings before giving way to Zach Wiseman. In the ninth, Wiseman would work around a leadoff double and a homerun that came one pitch after the hitter appeared struck out on a borderline ball call. Wiseman would then strike out the next two batters before inducing a ground ball to second to secure the Pioneer win.
Carroll will return to action next weekend as they travel to Mt. Vernon, Iowa to face Cornell College on Saturday and Sunday.
