Big Eighth Inning Sinks Pioneers

3/29/2015 8:10:00 PM

Box Score MT. VERNON, Iowa - Carroll University (6-8) dropped a heart-breaker as an eight run eighth inning allowed Cornell College to come from behind to earn the 13-10 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers overcame an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in both the third and fifth innings to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Cornell would chip away with single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 8-5 going into the fateful eight run inning.

Carroll managed to fight back in the top of the ninth, plating two runs to cut the lead to 13-10 with the bases loaded, but couldn't complete the comeback as they dropped their third consecutive game.

Carl Formento started on the hill and worked six strong innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out three.

Josh Lung, Aaron Roth, Alex Olson, Clayton Schmitt and Hunter Frey each collected a pair of hits for the Pios.

Coach Rear was disappointed with his team's execution on the weekend, "We struggled defensively all weekend to make the routine plays, give Cornell credit they are a solid team, but we didn't help ourselves on the defensive end."

Carroll will return to action as they travel to Judson University on Wednesday afternoon for a 4pm double-header.
