BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Sophomore forward Rachel Van Sluys (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored an unassisted goal in the 89th minute but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's soccer team lost to Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 in a physical, hard-fought College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game Saturday.
It was the third one-goal loss of the season for Carroll, which entered riding the momentum of a six-game unbeaten streak but dropped to 0-1-1 in conference and 7-3-1 overall.
Illinois Wesleyan, which won its CCIW opener to improve to 4-4-2 overall, scored two late, second-half goals to hold on for the victory.
Senior forward/midfielder Alison Seger scored in the 77th minute and senior forward Skyler Tomko contributed what became the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 78th minute for the Titans, who outshot Carroll 19-6 in the contest - including a critical 10-5 shot-on-goal advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina O' Block (Libertyville, Ill.) had eight saves in playing the entire 90 minutes for Carroll.
