CHICAGO, Ill. - The difficult, early-season struggles continued as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to University of Chicago 83-38 in a nonconference game Tuesday.
It was the third consecutive loss on the road for Carroll, which generated a season-low point total and dropped to 0-4 overall.
The Pioneers were outscored 50-27 in the first half, including what proved to be a decisive 33-15 margin in the momentum-building opening quarter.
Freshman guard Miranda Burt had a game-high 17 points with five steals to lead Chicago, which improved to 3-0 overall. Sophomore guard Katrina Williams followed with 10 points for the Maroons, who made five baskets from 3-point range and 6 of 11 free throws.
Junior guard Brittney Wald (Antigo, Wis.) had a team-high 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals for Carroll, which converted three 3-pointers and 9 of 11 free throws. Freshman guard Caylee Koker (Kenosha, Wis.) contributed nine points with junior forward Morgan Lund (Mondovi, Wis.) chipping in four points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard/forward Hannah Kloehn (Marshfield, Wis.) added four points and four rebounds for the Pioneers, who shot 24 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers.
Carroll was outrebounded 50-26 in the physical battle, highlighted by a critical 20-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
Chicago, which shot 51 percent from the field, scored 58 points in the paint along with 30 points off of turnovers.
