Carroll falls in CCIW opener

Koker scores 27 points to lead Pioneers

KENOSHA, Wis. - Freshman Caylee Koker (Kenosha, Wis.) scored 14 of her season-high 27 points in the second half but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to Carthage College 82-69 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at Tarble Arena on Wednesday evening.
Koker, a 5-foot-7 guard, also contributed six rebounds, four 3-point baskets, three assists and two steals for the Pioneers - who dropped to 0-8 overall.
Carthage, which improved to 2-0 in conference and 5-3 overall, led 64-56 after three quarters and pulled away by outscoring Carroll 18-13 over the course of the final 10 minutes - highlighted by a critical 12-3 run over a four-minute stretch.
The Pioneers - who led three times in the contest - trimmed the deficit to 68-60 on a clutch layup by Koker with 6:57 remaining but couldn't get any closer.
Sophomore guard Meredith Polzin (Pewaukee, Wis.) followed with 12 points and junior forward Morgan Lund (Mondovi, Wis.) had 11 points for Carroll, which  made 10 baskets from 3-point range and 7 of 12 free throws.
Sophomore guard Sara Hartl (Racine, Wis.) contributed nine points - including a 3-pointer to cap a 16-5 run as Carroll claimed a 47-46 lead with 4:27 left in the third quarter - five assists, four rebounds, and a steal for the Pioneers, who shot 42 percent from field-goal range but committed 15 turnovers. 
Junior guard Brittney Wald (Antigo, Wisc.) had four points a team-best nine rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard/forward Hannah Kloehn (Marshfield, Wis.) added four points and seven rebounds.
Freshman guard Madie Kaelber scored a team-high 22 points for Carthage, which shot 47 percent from the field, converted 10 3-pointers and made 8 of 13 free throws. Junior guard Morgan Harris chipped in a triple double with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Red outrebounded the Pioneers 42-35, including a 30-26 advanatge on the defensive glass.
