Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Carroll University (7-3) dropped both ends of a double header Saturday to Illinois College (8-3) by final scores of 6-1 and 4-2.
Game one would be decided in the bottom of the third inning. What started as a scoreless tie would see Illinois College score six runs in the inning on two errors, a walk and four hits. All but one of the runs would be earned.
Offensively the Pios stuggled at the plate managing only five hits while stiking out six times. Carroll would get on the board in the ninth inning as Dylan Grove would score on a Joe Huss RBI single to bring the final score to 6-1.
Game two would see the Pioneers take the early lead as Brady Durni would drive home Clayton Schmitt with a deep fly ball to centerfield to give Carroll the 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. However, the lead would be short lived as the Blue Boys would answer with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 1-1.
In the top of the fifth Ryan Hetherington would lead off the inning with a single to right field and advance to second on a single by Schmitt. Arron Buck would sacrifice both runners over, allowing Hetherington to score on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Jacob Langford and give the Pios the 2-1 lead.
Aaron Roth would cruise through seven strong innings, striking out nine, but would be replaced in the eighth inning with a pitch count of 110.
The Illinois College bats would come alive in the bottom of the eighth inning. A one out walk would start the rally, three consecutive hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly would plate three runs and stake the Blue Boys to a 4-2 lead going into the top of the ninth.
Back-to-back singles to start the ninth inning would give the Pio bench some life, but consecutive strike outs would have them down to their final out. Clayton Schmitt would single to load the bases with two outs but the rally would fall short as a well struck fly ball to right field was tracked down for the final out leaving the Pios with a heartbreaking 4-2 defeat.
Carroll returns to action tomorrow as they will stay in Jacksonville to face MacMurray College at 1pm Sunday.
