(Waukesha, Wis.) – It was an historic day at Schneider Stadium, as the Carroll University women's lacrosse team recorded its first victory in program history, knocking off Northwestern (MN) University in a thriller.
Kailey Leahy capped a late Pioneer comeback with the game-winning goal coming just 90 seconds from full time.
The match began with Carroll fans sensing it could be a magical day. The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-1 lead less than five minutes into the match and held a 5-3 advantage at the 16:20 mark.
But, the visitors closed out the half with five unanswered goals to go into the break with an 8-5 advantage.
Carroll head coach Michael Hodge must have given his squad an inspiring halftime speech because they opened the second half with three straight goals to knot the score at 8-8.
Like they did in the first half, Northwestern once again answered and took a two-goal lead (10-8) into the final five minutes of the game.
After that, it was all Carroll. Donna January (54:39) and Katie Majewski (55:59) each found the back of the net to tie the score and set up Leahy's game-winner.
Carroll's defense, and goalkeeper Shelby Will, took it from there and preserved the win, setting off a jubilant celebration.
January and Leahy each netted a hat-trick while Ariannah Ritter tallied twice. Amanda Gibbie, Majewski and Betty Koenig each scored once.
