Box Score 2 CAROL STREAM, Ill. - Carroll University (10-3) pitched its way to a pair of victories on Friday as they edged Concordia-Morehead 3-2 and Edgewood College 7-3.
In game one, Concordia-Morehead jumped out to the early 2-0 on a unearned run in the first and another single tally in the third inning.
Carroll cut the lead in half in the top half of the fifth inning as Alex Kermendy reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. With two outs, Brady Durni sent a line-drive to right field to plate Kermendy and bring the score to 2-1.
The Pioneer bats would stay hot in the top half of the sixth as Joe Huss would reach base on a one out single and advance to second on a walk to Jacob Langford. A deep flyball to right would advance Huss to third, setting up a double steal that would score Huss and advnce Langford to second base. Langford would then score on a Mitch Carlson single to give Carroll the 3-2 lead.
That would be all the run support the Pioneer pitching staff would need. Starter Carl Formento (3-1) would work into the ninth inning allowing seven hits and striking out three. However, he would leave with runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman Cameron Godinsky would enter with the tying run on third and strike out the first batter he faced and enduce the game ending ground ball to earn his first career save.
Game two would see the Pios score in the bottom of the first on a misplayed groundball to take the early 1-0 lead over Edgewood College.
Starting pitcher Aaron Roth would work out of trouble each inning but managed to keep Edgewood off the board as he worked five and two-thirds scoreless inniings. Freshman Alex Morland would enter in the sixth inning with two out and manage to stand the bases loaded as he recorded the strike out to end the inning.
The Pioneer bats would finally erupt in the seventh inning for five runs. Huss and Langford would each driving in runs, but the big blow came off the bat of Hunter Frey as he sent a fastball deep over the left field fence to give Carroll the 6-0 lead.
Carroll would tack on another run in the eighth inning to push the lead to 7-0 before Edgewood managed to get on the board with three runs in the ninth inning.
Roth (1-1) would collect the victory on the mound and Moreland would continue his stellar start to his initial season with two and a third scoreless innings. Senior Matt Risch would make his return to the mound after rehabbing from an injury that cost him all of the 2015 season.
Carroll returns to action on Saturday as they face host Wheaton College to close out the weekend at 5pm.
