Box Score WHEATON, Ill. - Carroll University (10-4) saw a 1-1 tie turn into a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Wheaton College (10-6) Saturday afternoon.
Wheaton took the early lead on a successfully executed double steal in the first inning, but starter Brian Jones (1-1) would settle in and have his best start of the young season. Jones would hold the Thunder scoreless through the next five innings.
Carroll would even the score in the top of the sixth inning as Joe Huss would double with two outs and score on a Jacob Langford single and bring the Pios back to even 1-1.
In the bottom half of the seventh a lead-off fielding error followed by four consecutive bunts would plate two runs for Wheaton to stake them to a 3-1 lead going into the eighth inning.
Wheaton would tack on three more in their half of the eighth inning to push the final score to 6-1.
Jones would finish with an impressive line, six and two-thirds innings pitched, seven hits, eight strike outs, two walks and just one earned run given up on the afternoon
"We received a great effort from Brian Jones on the mound today." commented Head Coach Stein Rear. "It was by far his best outing of the season and heading into the Midwest Conference part of our schedule in a couple of weeks, that's the type of effort we are going to need."
Carroll will open their home schedule next Saturday as they host UW-Superior at Frame Park with the first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
