Pios sweep Grinnell on Sunday

(Grinnell, Iowa) – The Carroll University softball team made a huge statement to its Midwest Conference foes with a doubleheader sweep of Grinnell College.

Carroll shutout Grinnell 7-0 in game one then outslugged GC 12-7 in game two.

Shelby Sommer dominated on the mound in the opener. She held Grinnell scoreless in a 6 1/3 inning performance, one day after a shutout victory over Cornell College. At the plate, Sommer went 3-for-3 and drove in the only run she would need in the top of the first inning.

Carroll was also hot at the plate, belting 16 hits. Megan Kohlmetz enjoyed a 5-for-5 day while Hannah Miller went 3-for-4. Kelly Sykes also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.

A major comeback was needed in the game two extra inning affair. Carroll again scored in the top of the first inning but Grinnell responded with six runs over the next three innings and held a 6-1 advantage through four innings.

The Pioneers rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-6 lead but Grinnell equalized with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings ahead of Carroll's 5-run eighth inning. Sommer came on in relief and picked up the victory with four innings of relief work. She was also the star at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five runs driven in.

Strasser drove in two runs on a 2-for-5 performance.
