Box Score MEQUON, Wis. - Carroll University (10-9) dropped a non-conference game at Concordia-Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon by the final score of 2-1.
Freshman Alex Morland made his first collegiate start and was stellar on the mound for Carroll. The righty worked five scoreless innings of no-hit baseball before being releived in the bottom of the sixth with a 1-0 lead.
That lead was gained in the top of the first inning. Brady Durni would lead off the game with a single to center and steal second base a batter later. Dylan Grove would drive the ball over the left fielder's head allowing Durni to trot home with the games first run to give the Pios the 1-0 advantage.
Concordia would knot the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single and would threaten to take the lead in the eighth. A lead off single and sacrifice bunt would put the go-ahead run at second with one out. Following and intentional walk to set up the force play, Jake Sweet would enduce an inning ending double play to keep the game tied at one going to the ninth inning.
Carroll would look to take the lead in the top of the ninth as back-to-back walks would give the Pios runners and first and second with no outs. However, a failed bunt attempt lead to a strike-out, followed by an infield pop-up and a ground out would leave runners stranded on base to end the inning.
A one out double followed by an infield single put runners at the corners for Concordia. Following an intentional walk to set up a force play at home, the winning run would score on a ball the got away from the catcher giving Concordia the 2-1 victory.
Carroll will return to action next Tuesday as the travel to Wisconsin Lutheran for a double header starting at 1pm.
