Box Score 2 WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (11-12, 1-5 MWC) split a home double-header with Ripon College dropping the opener 5-2 and winning the back-end game 10-5. The win in game two was the first win for Carroll over Ripon since the 2012 season.
Game one would see Ripon take the early lead in the top of the third inning as they would plate three runs on four hits and a walk. Carroll would respond in the bottom half of the third as Mitch Carlson would lead off with a double and score on a Brady Durni single to cut the Ripon lead to 3-1.
The Pioneers would cut into the lead again in the fifth as a two-out walk to Arron Buck and an infield single by Durni would put runners on the corners. A double steal would allow Buck to score and trim the Red Hawk's lead to 3-2.
Ripon would add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings on solo homeruns to seal the 5-2 victory in the opener.
Game two would see Ripon take the lead on a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Carroll would respond in the bottom half and take their first lead of the day as senior Clayton Schmitt would send a fly ball over the left field fence for a two-run homerun and the 2-1 lead.
The Pio lead would be short lived as another solo homerun in the top of the fifth would pull Ripon back into a 2-2 tie. Carroll would again knot up the game in the bottom of the fifth as Durni would score on a Dylan Grove RBI double to retake the lead at 3-2.
Ripon would retake the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs and add another in the top of the seventh to take the 5-3 lead.
Carroll would break out of their lengthy hitting slump in the bottom of the seventh plating seven runs. Hunter Frey, Schmitt, Grove and Jacob Langford would all record RBI doubles in the inning as the Pios would send 11 hitters to the plate in the inning.
The Carroll bullpen would lock down the win working scoreless eighth and ninth innings to give the Pioneers the much needed win.
Jake Sweet (2-2) would earn the victory on the mound for the Pios, coming in for starter Aaron Roth in the seventh. Roth worked six and a third strong innings, striking out six and walking just one.
Grove lead the offense going 4x5 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI.
The Pios will continue their weekend series with Ripon as they hit the road for another double header on Sunday, first pitch at 1pm.
