(Waukesha, Wis.) – The Carroll University softball team got back into Midwest Conference championship contention following a doubleheader sweep of visiting Ripon College.
The Pioneers hung on for a 2-1 victory in game one then pounded the Red Hawks 9-0 in 5-inning game two.
Carroll took advantage of a third inning error to go ahead 1-0 then Veronica Rodriguez drove in a run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
Ripon pulled to within 2-1 with two outs and a runner on second base but Shelby Sommer forced a liner to the shortstop to end the game. Sommer went the distance and gave up just five hits and one run (unearned).
Hannah Miller took the ball in game two and was dominant from the get-go. In five innings of work she surrendered just one hit.
Carroll's offense got going early in the nightcap, plating four runs in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth inning.
Sommer went 2-for-3 from the designated hitter spot and drove in two runs. Kelly Sykes also drove in two runs on a 2-for-3 performance. Megan Kohlmetz, Micah Clutter, Kelly Strasser and Rosie Craine each drove in a run for CU.
