Box Score 2 DE PERE, Wis - Carroll University (12-16, 2-8 MWC) split a pair of well played games on Saturday afternoon at St. Norbert College (15-11, 8-5 MWC) dropping the opener 5-2 and winning the nightcap 7-4.
In the opener, Caroll would get on the board early. Caleb Emmer would reach on a fielder's choice and advance to third on back-to-back singles by Dylan Grove and Joe Huss. Emmer would then score on a passed ball to give the Pios the 1-0 lead.
St. Norbert would answer with a run in the bottom half of the first and would add a single tally in the fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead. The Knights would tack on three runs in the seventh as they took advantage of a pair of Carroll errors to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Mitch Carlson would homer with two out in the ninth to cut the Norbert lead to 5-2, but that would be all the offense the Pios could muster in game one.
In the second game the momentum of the Carlson homerun in game one would carry into the start of game two. Carroll would score two in the opening inning as Jacob Langford and Dylan Grove would both single. Both runners would move up on a passed ball and in an amazing hustle play both Langford and Grove from second base would score on a wild pitch to give Carroll the 2-0 lead.
Hunter Frey would drive a pitch over the left field wall, his second of the year, to extend the Pio lead to 3-0 after two innings.
After St. Norbert would scratch across a run in the bottom of the fourth to trim the lead to 3-1, Carroll would answer with a solo run in the fifth on a Mitch Carlson RBI single and two more in the sixth on a Joe Huss double and Langford RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.
St. Norbert would manage a single run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 6-2. However, a sacrifice fly would plate another run for the Pios in the seventh as they build their lead to 7-2.
St. Norbert would threaten in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Andrew Stone would releive starter Aaron Roth and limit the damage to two runs and leave Carroll with a 7-4 lead heading to the ninth.
Senior Matt Risch, would take the mound in the ninth and promptly strike out the side, touching 89 on the radar gun to slam the door on St. Norbert earning his first save of the season.
Not to be lost on the day, senior Dylan Grove would recored five hits in the double header. With those five hits he climbs into a tie for most hits in a career at Carroll University. Grove's 156 career hits places him at the top of the all-time list tied with Jordan Stephans (2010-13).
Due to weather conditions, Sunday's double-header originally scheduled to be held in Waukesha, will be moved to De Pere. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
