Box Score 2 WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (17-19, 6-10 MWC) wrapped up their season with a split against Lawrence University on Saturday, winning game one 3-2 and dropping game two 11-8.
The opening game was all about senior Carl Formento. With his 12 strike outs in his eight innings of work, Formento broke both the single season and career strike out marks. Formento finished his senior season with 52 strike outs and his career with 155 punch outs.
Matt Risch would work the ninth to earn his eighth career save which ties him a top of the all-time Carroll University list.
Game two would be a gut wrenching loss. Down 7-6 going into the bottom of the eighth inning Carroll would put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Clayton Schmitt would execute a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that would allow both the tying run from third and the go ahead run from second to score and give the Pios the 8-7 lead going into the ninth.
However, Lawrence would respond with four runs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead 11-8.
Carroll would get the lead off man on in the bottom of the ninth but a double play ball and a fly out would end the rally.
Depite the loss, Carroll finishes the season with the second most wins in program history. Dylan Grove would also break the record for most hits in a single season with a single in the 8th inning, giving him 56 hit on the season.
