Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Jeff Hagenau

Carroll earns first victory of the season

Rossetti registers first collegiate double-double versus Edgewood

WAUKESHA, Wis.Katie Rossetti was a force on the court.
Rossetti, a 6-foot-2 freshman forward from Wauconda, Ill., emphasized that point by registering her first collegiate double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, three blocked shots and two 3-point baskets as the Carroll University women's basketball team defeated Edgewood College 70-57 in a nonconference game at Van Male Field House on Tuesday night.
It was the first victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 1-4 overall.
The inspired performance took on added significance as it was the Pioneers' first win on Ted H. Baker Court since Jan. 8, 2017.
The Pioneers led 36-33 at the intermission and responded by outscoring the Eagles 18-13 in the momentum-shifting third quarter - including 10 unanswered points over the course of the opening four minutes.
Rossetti scored four consecutive points to fuel the key run, highlighted by a strong inside basket to extend the lead to 42-33 with 8:06 remaining in the period.
"After getting off to a rough start this season, we really wanted to get this victory to prove that we are a good team that can compete with anyone," said Rossetti, who scored 10 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the Pioneers. "It was an amazing feeling being able to play up to our potential, maintain the lead and then finish it off on a strong note. At this point, we're still learning how to play together so it was satisfying to be able to take a strong step forward. With so many talented players in the lineup, it was nice to showcase our depth throughout the evening. This should act as a great motivator as we prepare for the games to come.
"To come away with my first double-double was special and really the result of my teammates playing unselfishly. From beginning to end, they showed their confidence in me and did a great job of distributing the ball. It was just a good feeling to be able to finish on the opportunities, step up to the challenge and contribute to the team's success."
Senior guard Brittney Wald  (Antigo, Wis.) contributed 14 total points for the Pioneers, who generated a season-high point total, made seven baskets from 3-point range and shot 40.5 percent from the field.
Wald asserted herself in the fourth quarter by contributing 10 points to power a decisive 14-2 run in the first five minutes - ignited by a mid-range jumper in the lane and free throw to extend the lead to 57-46 with 9:54 left.
"It was a super-exciting victory," said Wald, a second-team selection in the College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin last year. "We've been working really hard so to see that effort finally translate from the court to the scoreboard was an incredible experience. Being such a young team, this should act as a good confidence builder as we move forward and prepare for the conference opener.
"After struggling during the third quarter this season, it was awesome to be able to come out strong this time, maintain the momentum and put together a complete game. It was great to see everyone step up to the challenge and take the next step."
Freshman point guard Emily Majerus (Plymouth, Wis.) had 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for Carroll, which outrebounded the Eagles 47-44 - including a 17-14 advantage on the offensive glass.
Majerus provided a critical spark in the final minutes of the first half by scoring five straight points - including a wide-open 3-pointer from the top right portion of the perimeter to increase the lead to 30-26 with 5:36 left.
Freshman point guard Mallory Olszak (Crete, Ill.) chipped in seven points for Carroll, which forced 21 turnovers in the contest.
Freshman small forward Delaney Sjong (Salem, Wis.) followed with six points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard  Sara Hartl  (Racine, Wis.) and freshman guard  Anna Menges (Manitowoc, Wis.) each added six points to round out a consistent, balanced scoring attack.
"We took a strong step forward and showed our maturity level on the court today," Carroll second-year head coach Lindsay Schultz said. "Over the course of our first four games, the third quarter had been our Achilles heel so it was great to see how we reacted to the situation this time. After leading at halftime, we jumped out to a fast start in the third quarter, executed and took control of the game. At that point, we turned up the defensive intensity, got them out of rhythm and forced turnovers. When that happened, it allowed us to get out in transition, take advantage of a lot of open looks and finish on the opportunities. It was exciting to see everyone feed off the energy and continue to compete hard the entire way.
"We've been working hard to play a complete 40-minute game so I was very impressed with how we took another step closer with this effort."
Freshman guard Delaney Wilhelm scored a team-high 16 points for Edgewood, which dropped to 2-3 overall. Junior post player Allison Gordon had 12 points and freshman post Diamond Pikulyk had a team-best 10 rebounds.
