STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Freshman attackman Jeff Schultz (Franklin, Wis.) contributed a hat trick and an assist but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University men's lacrosse team began its spring break trip with a 13-10 loss to Franciscan University in a nonconference game at Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second road loss of the season for Carroll, which has lost four of its last five and dropped to 2-4 overall.
Tied 6-6 at halftime, Franciscan responded by scoring four unanswered goals over the course of opening 12 minutes of the third quarter.
Sophomore attackman Paul Kerchberger (Deer Park, Ill.) and freshman midfielder Dannon Ivey (Grass Valley, Calif.) each followed with two goals and an assist for the Pioneers, who were outshot 49-23 - including a 16-5 margin in the pivotal third quarter.
Junior midfielder Drake Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis.), sophomore attackman Edward Weizenicker (New Berlin, Wis.) and freshman midfielder Christopher Bechtel (Sammamish, Wash.) each had one goal for Carroll, which led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Junior attackman Jonas McGaig had a game-high five goals and two assists for Franciscan, which improved to 2-0 overall. Senior midfielder Paul Modzelewski and sophomore midfielder Dan McCartney each added three goals for the Barons, who maintained a 28-13 shot-on-goal advantage.
