Carroll begins spring trip with loss

Rodriguez has three hits for Pioneers

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Carroll University softball team began its 14-game spring trip with a 4-1 loss to Rhodes College in the opener of the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola Softball Complex on Saturday morning.
As the game remained tied 1-1 after three complete innings, Rhodes scored three unanswered runs on four hits in the top of the fourth to pull away.
Sophomore catcher Veronica Rodriguez (South Bend, Ind.) went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to lead Carroll, which dropped to 3-2 overall.
Senior right-hander Hannah Miller (Chicago, Ill.) took the pitching loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk through four innings.
Junior center fielder Kirsten Samuels went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for Rhodes, which improved to 14-10 overall. Senior third baseman Christine Hume followed with two hits, including what became a game-winning two-run single in the fourth for the Lynx, who amassed 14 hits.
Junior right-hander Allison Long threw a four-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk in earning a complete-game victory.
