Big Third Inning Sinks Pios

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Carroll University (4-5, 0-0 CCIW) fell to Washington College (7-7) on Wednesday morning by the final score of 14-5.

A fateful third inning would put the Pios in a hole they would not be able to climb out of.  Washington College would send 12 batters to the plate in the inning and score eight runs as the Carroll starting pitcher would be forced to leave the game with stiffness in his throwing arm.

To their credit, Carroll would answer back with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the early deficit to 8-4.

Washington College would stay hot with the bats in the bottom of the fourth as they would again extend their lead with six more runs to build a 14-4 lead.

From there the Carroll defense and bullpen would regain their composure and shut down the Washington College bats, but the damage was already done.

Carroll would add another run in the sixth on an RBI double off the bat of Jake Langford, to bring the score to 14-5.

Andrew Tanck, Logan Johnson, Langford and Hunter Frey would all work clean innings in relief for teh Pios.

Matt Putman would continue his hot start offensively, finishing the day 3x6 with an RBI and Brady Durni would chip in another three hits for the Pios.

Carroll will enjoy a much needed day off on Thursday before returning to action on Friday at 9am EST against Skidmore College.  Follow the Pioneers on Twitter @Pio_Baseball.
