KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Freshman right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) fired a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and seven walks but the Carroll University softball team lost to No. 18-ranked Trine University 2-1 to cap its final day of the Rebel Spring Games at Oren Brown Park on Friday.
It was the second loss to a nationally ranked opponent for Carroll, which finished with a 4-8 record on its spring break trip and 7-9 overall.
Junior first baseman Kaylee Fox hit a two-run home run in what proved to be a decisive bottom of the first inning for Trine, which improved to 13-0 overall.
Senior first baseman Kelly Strasser (Waterford, Wis.) hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth for Carroll, which had five hits.
Freshman catcher Haylee Arroyo (Mayville, Wis.) went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, who stranded three baserunners over the course of the final three innings in the hard-fought confidence-building performance. Sophomore pinch hitter Veronica Rodriguez (South Bend, Ind.) and freshman second baseman Elaine Anderson (Bristol, Wis.) each added a hit.
Freshman right-hander Hannah Kampmann pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts and three walks through five complete innings to earn a victory for Thine. Freshman right-hander Danielle Ray yielded two hits over the final two innings to pick up the save.
