Pios Top #15 Augustana in CCIW Split

MOLINE, Ill. – Carroll University (5-12, 1-2 CCIW) dropped the opening game on Saturday 3-0 but came back from a 6-0 deficit to knock off 15th ranked Augustana 9-7 in the nightcap.
In game one, Augustana opened the scoring on an unearned run in the first to take the 1-0 lead.

Augustana would add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to push their lead to 3-0.  That would be more than enough offense for the Vikings as they would
Junior, Carter Howard would turn in a solid outing on the mound for Carroll in game one, working six and a third inning surrendering just two earned runs in the tough luck loss.
Game two would see Augustana build a 6-0 lead after five and a half innings.

The Carroll offense would start to wake up in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Sophomore Zach Meyer would drive home Hunter Frey to get the Pios on the board and Dylan Callahan would drive home Nolan Heck to cut the Auggie lead to 6-2.

In the seventh inning, Carroll would continue to chip away at the Augustana lead.  Consecutive RBI hits from Jake Langford, Heck and Meyer would bring the Pios to within 6-5.
Augustana would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to push their lead to 7-5.

With one out in the eighth inning, Jacob Horner would double to start the Carroll rally.   A balk would put Horner on third, where he would score on a Brady Durni ground out where Durni would reach on an error on the first baseman.  Durni would steal second and score on a two-out single by Hunter Frey to tie the game at seven.  Langford would be hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs.  Heck would single to drive home Frey to give the Pios the 8-7 lead and Meyer would drive home Langford to push the lead to 9-7.

Sophomore Cam Godinsky would come in to work the ninth inning on the mound for Carroll.  Godinsky would strike out the first two batters of the inning and seal the win with a fly out to center field to earn the save.

The win would be the first in the return to the CCIW for Carroll and their first against a top 15 ranked program in recent history.
Heck, Meyer and Frey would all finish with three hits on the day as the Pioneers would bang out 14 hits on the day.

Carroll will close out the series against Augustana as game three is scheduled for 9am on Sunday morning.
