Pios fall to No. 22 UW-Whitewater

Mueller, Dunnam, Wierzal provide spark in nonconference road loss

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Carroll University women's volleyball team lost to No. 22-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19 in a nonconference dual meet at Russell Arena on Wednesday night.
Carroll, which dropped to 15-7 overall, has lost three of its last four duals - with two coming at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents and the other against a squad hovering just out of the Top 25.
Junior outside hitter Kylie Mueller (Fox Lake, Ill.) had 10 kills and three blocks for the scrappy Pioneers, who avoided a sweep by generating 13 kills with a .184 hitting percentage and only four errors in the confidence-building third set. Junior middle blocker Erika Dunnam (Shawano, Wis.) followed with 10 kills, senior outside hitter Josie Wierzal (Frankfort, Ill.) collected nine kills and sophomore middle blocker Rachel Noonan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had five blocks.
Leading 23-21 in the gritty third set, Wierzal delivered back-to-back kills to ensure the lone victory of the night for the Pioneers.
Senior defensive specialist Amanda Hahn (Itasca, Ill.) chipped in 18 digs, junior outside hitter Cassidy Mrotek (Manitowoc, Wis.) had  six kills and 19 digs with junior setter Emma Przeslicke (Evergreen Park, Ill.) adding 20 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Spera contributed 14 kills and junior outside hitter Rachel Butterfield had 10 kills to lead UW-Whitewater, which won its second straight on its Faculty/Breast Cancer Awareness Night and improved to 17-4 overall. Senior defensive specialist Brittany Robinson had a career-high and school-record 45 assists for the Warhawks.
