Pioneers upset No. 15 Illinois Wesleyan

Tyler Ingebrigtsen scores season-high 27 points to power Carroll in CCIW road victory

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior forward Tyler Ingebrigtsen (Elk Grove, Ill.) scored a season-high 27 points, including 4 of 6 free throws, and finished with seven rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot as the Carroll University men's basketball team upset No. 15-ranked Illinois Wesleyan 90-83 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at the Shirk Center on Saturday night.
It was the first conference victory of the season for Carroll, which snapped a five-game losing streak with the statement-making performance to improve to 1-3 in the league standings and 3-6 overall.
Ingebrigtsen, who converted on 11 of 16 field goals, was a force in the second half by scoring 15 points - highlighted by a critical mid-range jumper and free throw to complete a three-point play and claim a 74-73 lead with 5:26 remaining.
Trailing 81-80 late in the contest, the Pioneers showcased their resilience and grit by answering with a decisive 10-2 run over the course of the final two minutes - reclaiming an 85-83 lead on a pressure-packed layup and free throw by junior guard/forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.) with 51 seconds left.
Carroll made 5 of 6 free throws within the final 24 seconds to seal the dramatic victory. 
The Pioneers, who led 46-39 at the end of the confidence-building first half, showcased their depth, balance and athleticism with nine players reaching the scoring column - highlighted by five in double figures.
Soule followed with 13 points, a team-best nine rebounds, two steals and an assist for Carroll, which converted seven baskets from 3-point range, 17 of 26 free throws and shot 51.6 percent from field-goal range. Junior guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) contributed 13 points with two 3-pointers.
Senior guard Troy Howat (Plainfield, Ill.) chipped in 12 points with one 3-pointer and 7 of 9 free throws for the Pioneers, who asserted themselves in the low post by scoring 42 points in the paint and outrebounding the Titans 36-33 - maintaining a 13-10 advantage on the offensive glass. Freshman forward Blake Williams (Lone Tree, Colo.) had 11 points with three 3-pointers. Senior guard Ray Pierce (Milwaukee, Wis.) added six points.
Senior guard Brady Rose scored a team-high 27 points with four 3-pointers, five assists and two rebounds for Illinois Wesleyan, which dropped to 1-3 in conference and 7-3 overall. Senior guard Colin Bonnett had 21 points for the Titans, who made seven 3-pointers, 18 of 28 free throws and shot 50 percent from the field.
